Pumps

As a child, I noticed many of the Italian seamstresses wearing pumps and hosiery while working in my family’s coat factory. Stilettos dangle on the telephone wires above the entrance of the factory, which has become my workshop. Heels serve as a constant reminder of the beloved women in my life, the country from which they came, and their hard-working feet.

Study for Brothers

My Study for Brother vein of work is driven by my older brother Anthony and the mythos I’ve cultivated over the years surrounding his erotic inclinations. They are an idealization of brother as a creature untouched by Chronos. Each sculpture is assembled using three main components arranged from top to bottom: Italian confections, raku fired ceramic, and cast aluminum.

My Clementines

My Clementine sculptures are hand sculpted and textured using rubber tipped instruments and more often now, a hand broom. I apply secret glaze recipes and implement firing techniques of my friend Ricky Boscarino of Luna Parc. The form stems from an elated childhood Christmas memory involving a hidden gift: a crate of clementines buried under a pile of snow marked by reindeer hoof prints and littered with remnants of chewed carrots.

My Bare Nakeds

My Bare Naked vein of work functions as paintings with copper mesh from my family’s press machines serving as my canvas. I work to mold the mesh onto the stretcher akin to my father’s methods of manipulating materials for his marine upholstery business. I’m attracted to the oval shape and its reference to a human head as well as the Roman Colosseum.

My Immaculate Conception

The My Immaculate Conception vein of work consists of lichen adhered to conglomerated groggy bricks that I find along the shoreline of the Hudson River. The form consists of tendrils jutting from the anchored mass. This vein of work is reminiscent of motifs found in historical immaculate conception paintings, specifically the radiating lines from the angels to the Virgin Mary. The materials are personally significant and collectively symbolic of my Newburgh, NY.

Facts

Fact is a vein of work that consists of house paint poured and soaked into towels and bedsheets from my childhood and beyond. I drag a stick through the different layers of paint to marble the surface. I often throw glitter into the mixture. Once dried, I wrestle to mount it to what I consider an appropriate stretcher; be it a bicycle frame, the steel base of a table, or my own welded concoction of steel, made from objects found in my family’s factory or on walks around Newburgh. I love the faux marble effect and how it echoes what I experienced seeing in Roman churches and cathedrals, Venetian plaster, etc. I feel there is much to be explored in regard to dimensional painting. Jay Defeo described The Rose as “a marriage between painting and sculpture.” I subscribe to that notion with my Facts.

My Men of Endurance

My Man of Endurance is a Martyr, to the most saintly degree. He does not know anything else but to stumble through life suffering the most extreme agonies of existence. He is cursed with this unlucky fate that he was dealt, yet persists onward, valiantly. My Man of Endurance's overall form resembles that of the Predator's human skull and vertebrae trophies. He is always pigmented blue and is topped with a gourd.
